Fingal's Cave is a 270-foot (82-meter) deep sea cave formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns.

An ancient lava flow formed this site roughly 60 million years ago. It is the main attraction on the uninhabited Isle of Staffa. The cavern stands 72 feet (22 meters) high.

In Scottish Gaelic, it is known as 'Uamh-Binn' or 'Cave of Melody'. The space is famous for its natural acoustics.

The Causeway

15 minutesUneven, slippery path

This narrow path of hexagonal basalt columns leads from the boat jetty to the cave entrance. The rock surface is uneven and extremely slippery when wet. Hold onto the handrail at all times to navigate safely along the cliff base.

Inside the Cave

20 minutesNatural acoustics

The cavern extends about 230 feet (82 meters) deep into the island. Towering symmetrical columns line the walls. Listen quietly to hear the waves echoing inside the chamber. These melodic sounds famously inspired Felix Mendelssohn to write his 'Hebrides Overture' in 1829.
